Refugio State Beach

Surfing Refugio State Beach

Refugio beach is an idyllic campground complete with clear water creeks and palm trees.  The point is sheltered from the wind and is home to a slow and mushy wave that is perfect for beginners.  Be prepared to pay the $8 state beach access fee to surf here.

Small wave at Refugio
A small wave at Refugio.

It takes a big west swell for this wave to turn on and it will still be very tame, if you’re a serious surfer, consider heading down the coast towards Santa Barbara to catch the swell.  But if you prefer mellow, long boarding type waves, then Refugio is a great break.

Also, be sure to hike to the cliff above the point for some amazing views of the bay.
