Praia de Tavira, Algarve

When you’re looking for the very best collection of beaches in Portugal, all roads lead to the Algarve. A particular favourite of both locals and tourists in the area is the unique sandy stretch of Praia de Tavira. Covering over 10km, this popular beach is found on Tavira Island, which sits just off of Portugal’s southern coast, with a regular ferry service connecting the mainland to the island.

Once you arrive, you will be welcomed by swathes of soft white sand, and all the amenities you’d expect from one of the most revered beaches in the Algarve. Rows of sunbeds and umbrellas, a selection of bars and restaurants, and crystal clear waters perfect for cooling off in come as standard at Praia de Tavira, making it the perfect beach day excursion.

Praia de Odeceixe, Algarve

You don’t have to travel far along the coast to find another one of Portugal’s sandy jewels. Praia de Odeceixe is one of the Algarve’s most sheltered beaches, making it a hotspot for sea swimming and other water sports. Steep cliffs frame this relatively small beach, which has earned the Blue Flag Award, making it the gold standard for beaches in the area.

One unique feature of this beach is the Ribeira de Seixe river which runs along the perimeter of the sand before ending up in the Atlantic Ocean. The calmer waters in the river make it ideal for younger children looking to make a splash without having to brave the slightly livelier Atlantic waters. Particularly at low tide, small rock pools and lagoons can form around the beach, allowing you to soak up the sun in the relaxing waters.

Praia de Moledo, Moledo

Whilst the Algarve undoubtedly has one of Europe’s best collections of beaches, there are plenty of other sandy stretches across Portugal that give them a run for their money. Just a stone’s throw from the Spanish border in the north west of the country, you will find Praia de Moledo, a hotspot for household names and holiday makers alike.

It’s not uncommon to spot celebrities or national dignitaries soaking up the sun on this beautiful stretch of coastline. Exposed to the severe Atlantic winds, conditions can become quite blustery at Praia de Moledo, which is music to the ears of water sports enthusiasts, with wind-surfers often seen taking on the formidable waves.

At the end of the day, put your evening plans on hold and take a moment to admire the stunning sunset which can be enjoyed from the sands of Praia de Moledo.
